Seven Things You Don’t Know about Getting a Vasectomy

Seven Things You Don’t Know about Getting a Vasectomy

Vasectomies: many people have heard of them, but just as many have heard rumors and exaggerations about this common and safe procedure. There are numerous myths and misconceptions about preparing for, undergoing, and recovering from a vasectomy, so much so that men can be deterred from even considering the procedure.

At San Diego Vasectomy Center (SDVC), we understand that worry regarding the procedure — even a quick and straightforward one — can keep men from scheduling a vasectomy consultation. We want to set the record straight on what it’s really like to have a vasectomy, not what it appears to be on television and in movies.

  1. You will not be in “agony.” Yes, you can experience some mild discomfort and soreness post-procedure, but men who have a vasectomy are not confined to a bed for days and weeks. You can return to work after two to three days post-vasectomy unless your job involves heavy lifting or other physical activity.
  2. You do not have to wait a long time to have sex. Men who undergo vasectomies can have 3-4 weeks after a vasectomy depending on your comfort level. You should continue to use condoms or other birth control until your semen is tested and shown to be free of sperm.
  3. There are no needles or scalpels at SDVC. We utilize the No Needle No Scalpel vasectomy.
  4. Most vasectomies are almost or entirely covered by insurance.
  5. In the event your vasectomy isn’t covered by insurance, the procedure is significantly cheaper than the female alternative to a vasectomy – tubal ligation. A vasectomy typically costs $1,395.
  6. Vasectomies are common. About 500,000 men have a vasectomy each year in the United States.
  7. If you wish, sperm banking is an option. If you are almost certain but not 100 percent sure that you have completed building your family, you can freeze your sperm pre-vasectomy.

A vasectomy shouldn’t be an intimidating experience, especially with modern technology and trained, experienced urological surgeons available to perform the procedure. If you’re ready to schedule a vasectomy consultation, please contact SDVC today.
