Am I a Good Candidate for a Vasectomy?
Who makes a good candidate for a vasectomy? If you’re considering the procedure, but unsure if it’s the right fit for your family planning goals, the San Diego Vasectomy Center has prepared an easy checklist to review, which you can find below:
- Men who are certain they have completed their families
- Men who are certain they do not wish to have children
- Men who have frozen their sperm in case they wish to have children in the future
- Men with a female partner who does not wish to undergo tubal ligation or use female non-permanent contraception such as the birth control pill
- Men who do not want to continue using condoms or other male non-permanent contraception with a female partner
It’s permanent contraception
You should always consider the vasectomy procedure to be permanent. Yes, it can be reversed, but your surgeon will not encourage the procedure if you are not fully committed to permanent contraception. Common situations in which a vasectomy reversal is sought include divorce or the death of a partner. Younger men may be discouraged from undergoing the procedure, but it is ultimately up to each patient.
I want a vasectomy, but I’m worried that it will be painful.
The No Needle No Scalpel Vasectomy offered at the San Diego Vasectomy Center can assuage any concerns you may have over whether your experience or post-procedure time will be painful. We use Exparel, which provides pain relief for three days after your procedure. This covers the time during the procedure and the first few days after when most men are likely to experience some discomfort. Some patients may fear pain, but with Exparel, patients will only experience soreness.
Your surgeon can provide a detailed timeframe as to when any discomfort will dissipate, but men who work outside of manual labor positions can easily return to work in just two to three days.
Men still considering whether a vasectomy is the right route for their family planning goals are bound to have additional questions. We invite prospective patients to visit some of our most popular blog posts before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Bastuba at San Diego Vasectomy Center.
