If you have been searching for an easy and effective form of birth control, it may be time to consider a vasectomy. Understandably, for many men, the idea of surgery may cause hesitation. However, learning more about this procedure and its benefits may help alleviate any fears you may have.

1. Efficacy Rates

Vasectomies are highly effective in preventing unwanted pregnancy. After getting a vasectomy, a man has less than a 1% chance of impregnating his female partner. In comparison, other forms of contraception, such as condoms and birth control pills only have efficacy rates of 84% and 91%, respectively.

2. Low-risk Procedure

Specializing in the no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomy, our patients can expect a painless and quick procedure, lasting about 10-30 minutes. During the procedure, one incision is made to lift, cut, and tie the vas deferens, which are the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. Because the incision is so small, no stitches or sutures are necessary. Additionally, chances of bruising and scarring are significantly reduced with the no-needle, no-scalpel technique.

3. Quick Recovery

Our vasectomies are performed using Exparel, which is a pain relief anesthetic that can last for 3 days after the procedure. Once the anesthetic wears off most patients only need over-the-counter pain medication and an ice pack to remain comfortable. While patients can return to work 2-3 days post-procedure, strenuous activity should be avoided for 5-7 days after surgery. Additionally, it is recommended to abstain from sex for 7 days to allow for proper healing.

4. No Changes in Sexual Health

Many men fear that a vasectomy will lower their sex drive and or ability to ejaculate. However, vasectomies do not interfere with the hormones that control erections and orgasms. All sexual functioning will remain unchanged. Men are still able to produce ejaculate, however, no sperm will be present.

5. Reducing Burden on Female Partner

Most forms of birth control that rely on the female partner require diligence and taking medication/receiving care in a timely manner. Unlike other methods of birth control, a vasectomy can offer a “one-and-done” solution. Additionally, female forms of birth control often interfere with a woman’s hormones, causing physical and/or emotional side effects that not all women can tolerate.

Making Your Decision

If you have any unanswered questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out. We understand that making the decision to receive a vasectomy is not easy, and therefore we are available to help you assess whether a vasectomy is right for you. Our priority is for all our patients to feel comfortable and secure in their plans.
