Vasectomies are an increasingly popular form of male birth control. Quick, easy, and effective, a vasectomy can be a great option for men seeking long-lasting contraception. While a vasectomy is technically a surgical procedure, don’t let this scare you. In this blog, we’ll explore some of the reasons why you should consider getting a vasectomy.

1. Vasectomies Are Highly Effective

Men who’ve received vasectomies have a less than 1% chance of impregnating their partners. Other forms of contraception have much lower efficacy rates. For example, condoms and birth control pills have rates of only 85% and 91%, respectively.

2. Straightforward and Low-Risk Procedure

A no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomy is a simple and low-risk surgery. Before the procedure begins, patients are given anesthesia by means of a hypospray. The doctor then makes a tiny hole in the scrotum. Next, the doctor gently lifts the vas deferens out of the scrotum, cuts them, and ties them off. The vast majority of patients experience little to no pain or discomfort. The whole procedure takes between 10 and 30 minutes and is performed in-office. Furthermore, no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomies typically don’t cause any noticeable side effects or complications, such as infection or bleeding.

3. Fast Recovery

Most patients can return to work two to three days after surgery and resume normal physical activity within a week. For those first few days, your recovery period will probably include sweatpants, TV, and an icepack and/or aspirin for any mild discomfort. You will also have to wait up to seven days before engaging in sexual intercourse. However, once you do resume having sex, it’s important that you continue to use contraception until your doctor confirms that there is no sperm left in your vas deferens.

4. No Effects on Sexual Health and Functioning

Common vasectomy misconceptions lead many men to believe that vasectomies lower libido. However, vasectomies do not interfere with the male sex hormones that lead to erections and orgasms. Your body will continue to function normally with the only difference being that sperm will no longer be present in the ejaculate. In fact, many men report that their sex lives improve after getting a vasectomy.
